10 Questions to Find Your Style

Last year (that’s so weird to say!) I had one pair of pants that fit and I decided to do something drastic. No, no, nothing crazy like exercising to fit into my old clothes (heaven forbid!). I hired a stylist. Best.Decision.Ever. She helped me shop my closet and figure out what I needed to buy. I’m 35, how did I not own a long-sleeve T-shirt? After getting the basics we mixed and matched and created countless outfits. I learned so many great tips that I’ll share over the next few weeks.

Find Your Style

The first thing we did was talk through a short & simple questionnaire. Just 10 questions! It’s funny how you think you know your style and then you realize that you hate wearing green, don’t even own a skirt, and can’t be bothered with jewelry most days. The questions nicely combine what you like and feel comfortable in with the practical considerations of your everyday life.

finding your style

Here are my answers. Share yours in the comments!

1. Business or casual? Um, casual. Maybe a little too casual. I need to make an effort to “get dressed” on a more regular basis.

2. What do you wear most of the day? Jeans, tunic t-shirt and cardigan. Layers are definitely my friend. I love being cozy.

3. What do you like/dislike about shopping? I easily get overwhelmed shopping by myself. The looks on the mannequins are never what look good on me.

4. Is there anything you hate to wear? Skirts. I never wear them. Hate them in fact.

5. Do you like accessories? I love them but I’m so indecisive that I end up wearing nothing.

6. What do you feel most comfortable in? Layers. Nothing too tight or clingy. I could live in jeans, cotton Ts and flats.

7. Do you have dressy/evening attire? Not really. Do hot pink pants count? I might wear more dresses if I had some warm, cozy tights.

8. What are your favorite/least favorite colors? Red, blue and purple are my favorites. And stripes, obviously. I hate green. And yellow.

9. Price, Quality or Size? A combination of prize and size. I’m willing to pay a little bit more for clothes that fit well and are flattering. And quality has become more important. I want clothes that feel good on.

10. What stores do you favor? You can’t beat the pants from Ann Taylor Loft. And most of my shirts and wraps are from Old Navy, Banana Republic and Gap.

Thank you for opening my eyes ;)

  6. Debbie says

I look better in cooler colors than warm colors…I’m a “winter”. Knowing that has REALLY helped me make better color choices when shopping for clothes… casual or dressy,..

  7. says

That was fun, and useful ! Here’s my answers !
    1. Business or casual? Business, but only because of my work environment, I am compensating by being very casual on the weekend !
    2. What do you wear most of the day? Skirt and a blouse or sweater, with warm tights in the winter, and pumps
    3. What do you like/dislike about shopping? I like to shop alone and to have a lot of time on my hand. I can’t buy a thing until I’ve been in my all my favorite strores in a mall. I love shopping online too ! I hate looking for something specific, because most likely I will not find it
    4. Is there anything you hate to wear? Suits, I have to wear them for work, but it always feel a little like a costume. I mostly will wear a nice blazer with a skirt instead !
    5. Do you like accessories? I love them, especially bracelets and scarves. Never seem to be able to pick the right necklace.
    6. What do you feel most comfortable in? Skinny jeans, flats or riding boots, some kind of vest and a tee
    7. Do you have dressy/evening attire? Not really, I do have a little black dress that I can dress up if need be !
    8. What are your favorite/least favorite colors? I hate lilac, and beige doesn’t look good on me. Love yellow and blue the best.
    9. Price, Quality or Size ? I am willing to pay a little more money on classic well tailored items that I will wear for years and yeard, but not on trendy items. I need to get a good pay per wear ratio.
    10. What stores do you favor? I absolutely adore J Crew, they have the best pencil skirts and blouses that are classic and modern at the same time (and even if I paid more for those pieces, they are my most worn items). I love GAP for pants that are always perfect for my shape. And Forever 21 for trendy pieces that I don’t want to spend too much on !

  9. says

I had fun with this one.

    1. Business or casual? Somewhere in between. I never wear jeans, always skirts. I’d say probably more 50s housewife that works at an office……that’s not really one of those two though!
    2. What do you wear most of the day? Dresses, cardigans, and scarves
    3. What do you like/dislike about shopping? Crowds. Or none in my size available. I’m a big fan of online shopping.
    4. Is there anything you hate to wear? Pants. Complete opposite of you not wearing skirts!
    5. Do you like accessories? Everything with animals. So yes.
    6. What do you feel most comfortable in? Dresses. Nothing on my legs, please.
    7. Do you have dressy/evening attire? Yes indeedy do!
    8. What are your favorite/least favorite colors? I love all color. But I really am not a purple person due to a hatred in my family (it looks bad on us.) That being said, I own purple dresses. I don’t dislike any color. Oh. Wait. Bubblegum pink.
    9. Price, Quality or Size? I will pay for good quality and size. Quality is key. Usually price and quality are fairly hand in hand.
    10. What stores do you favor? Lots of online retailers. I have favorite brands.

This was kind of a fun questionnaire – made me giggle because my answers were like complete 180s from yours!

  10. says

I am really excited for this series!! Heaven knows my closet needs HELP!

I can’t wait for the rest! Thanks for hiring the stylist, so I didn’t have to!

  11. says

Whoa now! Love the new look of your blog!! :)

And oooohhhh I love this post!! I think I’m finally figuring out my own style and am working to get more items that I’m in love with and will actually wear. Here are my answers :

    1. Business or Casual? Umm… it’s almost lunch time and I’m still in my pajamas. :/ Yeah, we’ll go with casual on this one.

    2. What do I wear most of the day? Comfortable clothes. Shorts and a t-shirt in the summer, sweatshirt and shorts/pants in the winter. I do get dressed some days… I promise I do!!

    3. Shopping Likes/Dislikes? I love mixing and matching and buying things that I can wear with clothes I already own. I like having go-to pieces that create different outfits for different occasions. I dislike having to try on item after item. Sometimes it’s necessary, but it’s annoying and too time-consuming. I try to avoid it if possible, and I’ve definitely made purchases before telling myself I’ll try it on at home and return it if I hate it.

    4. Hate to wear? Nothing. Well… too tight clothing, low cut shirts, short shirts/shorts. No hoochie mama clothes for me thanks… lol! ;) hahahaha

    5. Accessories yay or nay? YAY! YAY! DOUBLE YAY! I love accessorizing!! I love wearing bold pieces in complementary colors of my outfits. Like bright yellow necklaces with deep purple gem toned-shirts. I always accessorize. Every. Time.

    6. Most comfortable in? I’m with you, LAYERS! I love skinny jeans or leggings with tops, boyfriend cardigans, and boots or flats. That’s my favorite outfit!

    7. Dressy/evening attire? Yes. I have lots of church dresses, businessy clothes for those rare occasions I have to go into the office, and some dressy tops and heels if I have a hot date. Bow-chicka-wow-wow! ;)

    8. Colors? Least favorite to wear – RED. It looks weird with my hair. It makes my hair look really dull and muted. Blegh. Some pinks, for the same reason. Favorite to wear – BLACK, also purples, blues, teals, greens, yellows, really, I’ll wear any color just about besides reds, oranges and pinks.

    9. Price, Quality or Size? Price. It doesn’t matter what the quality or fit is like, if I can’t afford it, I can’t afford it.

    10. Stores I favor? Old Navy, Maurices, JC Penney, Gap, Target

  12. says

This is a great questionnaire. I had to find my style through a lot of trial and error and it’s still evolving. Now I help my friends shop their closets and come up with new ways to wear what they have. It’s great to have a fresh set of eyes look at what you own!
