Get Glowing Skin with Turmeric Mask

I’m starting a new series on Simple Beauty because I’ve discovered how good it feels to pamper your skin. This discovery was followed shortly by the realization that I can’t afford salon facials – or fancy beauty products! Whether it’s using Kool-Aid to brighten blonde, making your own rose petal body oil, or making a turmeric mask for skincare I’ll share easy, budget-friendly ideas for looking your best.

“Secret Beauty Weapon”

I read recently that actress Thandie Newton recently called turmeric her “secret beauty weapon.” Isn’t that just for curry? Nope!

Not only does this spice have amazing healing properties (my mom is taking it as a supplement because there is evidence it kills cancer cells) but it’s also a great beauty product. Turns out Indian brides have long used turmeric as a head-to-toe body scrub and face mask to brighten skin before their weddings.

Turmeric beauty benefits

  • Turmeric is high in antioxidants that slow down cell damage.
  • It’s widely used as a skin exfoliant and improves skin’s texture.
  • It helps with inflammatory skin conditions, such as acne, dry skin, psoriasis and eczema.
  • It helps reduce pigmentation and even out the skin tone.
  • It is also said to diminish wrinkles.

DIY Turmeric Mask

Make your own turmeric face mask

1. Mix flour, turmeric, honey and milk to make a paste

  • 2 tablespoons of flour. You can use regular flour, rice flour or ground oats if your skin is dry.
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 3 tablespoons milk. You can also use yogurt to fight acne.
  • A few drops of honey

2. Apply a thin layer to your face and let it dry for 20 minutes

3. Rinse off in the shower, scrubbing gently to remove.

4. Apply your favorite moisturizer.

Will it stain my face?

Lots of folks worried that the Kool-Aid would turn their hair purple, so I want to assure you that this won’t turn your face yellow or orange. But I definitely recommend a thin layer – the more you pile on the greater your chances of staining, especially on your neck where skin is thinner. I noticed some staining on my hands but it came off easily. You can always wash your face again after showering.

Your kids/husband might find this mask a little disconcerting so it’s also a good idea to do this when you have some alone time! I was going to take a picture with it on, but it was just too frightening.

Have fun and enjoy your glow!

Read many comments about eczema. Mom had it so bad her hands would go hard crack and bleed. It was horrible. She tried the simplest thing and it worked! 2 nettle teas for3 days in a row….and it disappeared! !!

I tried this last night!!! It was awesome! It did stain my hands after I put it on but a couple of washes and it was gone.

I was scared I would be orange/yellow (I have brown caramel colored skin) since I’m putting it on for a longer period of time. But amazingly, there were no stains!

My skin was glowing and I had a big pimple that hurt and the next morning it’s practically almost gone! I think I’ll be using this every other day and I hope it doesn’t irritate my skin. The mask feels soooo good, too. The smell can be a pit overpowering but you’ll get over it.

    Try it, girls!

Hi everyone. I use Tumeric for my face but also to brush my teeth! The tumeric washes off skin pretty easily but may seriously stain your fingernails. I wear plastic surgical gloves to protect my nails as I tend to keep them natural and don’t want to look like a nicotine fiend. I sometimes add a bit of Almond Oil (organic, first pressed) to the mask as I have dry skin.

I also mix a dab of tumeric (1 teaspoon) with a few drops of warm water (I add it a bit at a time using the same spoon) to make a paste and use an old toothbrush (it will STAIN) with soft brushes to just brush the tumeric on my teeth. It whitens wonderful, is non abrasive, doesn’t really taste like anything, helps heal any mouth ulcers or cuts faster and is CHEAP. I buy the tumeric in bulk and keep it in a pretty air tight jar. I use it a few times a week in the evening because I have more time then as you want to brush for about 4 mins (usually the time it takes to use up the little mixture in bits at a time) and any yellow tinge is gone by morning. Spitting in your sink makes a mess so I have a little pretty basket type tray that includes some cleaner and sponge just for this cleanup and holds all my “beauty” tumeric collection together. I just get out the tray which has everything I need and then put it all away all tidy. Quite simple really.

And here is another treat I learned from an Asian friend…buy yourself pretty little bowls and towels JUST for your beauty treatments (I use darker towels so I don’t have to worry about stains) – they are so zen and spa and make you feel like you are femme pampered and special. I got some inexpensive ones in Chinatown but I am sure you can use whatever speaks to you.

Hi I’ve just started taking turmeric(with curcuminoids) capsules for ulcerative colitis. Its anti-inflammatory properties have made a HUGE difference as my medication wasn’t cutting it and I would have had to take steroids. The effect was immediate and I’ve even reduced the meds. I accidently bought plain turmeric capsules which u can get for $25 but they go a long way (they have a much lower curcumin component but are perfect for skin) and have been breaking 3 open and mixing them with a few drops of milk to make a paste for a mask and leaving it on for about an hr.
So far it exfoliates, has reduced acne visibly straight away (due to its antibacterial properties) and reduced redness and oiliness and didn’t stain my skin . I researched it extensively before taking it and using it as a mask, it also reduces pigmentation and smooths wrinkles but this isn’t obvious yet (I’ve only done 2 masks) Please try this !
