I’m starting a new series on Simple Beauty because I’ve discovered how good it feels to pamper your skin. This discovery was followed shortly by the realization that I can’t afford salon facials – or fancy beauty products! Whether it’s using Kool-Aid to brighten blonde, making your own rose petal body oil, or making a turmeric mask for skincare I’ll share easy, budget-friendly ideas for looking your best.
“Secret Beauty Weapon”
I read recently that actress Thandie Newton recently called turmeric her “secret beauty weapon.” Isn’t that just for curry? Nope!
Not only does this spice have amazing healing properties (my mom is taking it as a supplement because there is evidence it kills cancer cells) but it’s also a great beauty product. Turns out Indian brides have long used turmeric as a head-to-toe body scrub and face mask to brighten skin before their weddings.
Turmeric beauty benefits
- Turmeric is high in antioxidants that slow down cell damage.
- It’s widely used as a skin exfoliant and improves skin’s texture.
- It helps with inflammatory skin conditions, such as acne, dry skin, psoriasis and eczema.
- It helps reduce pigmentation and even out the skin tone.
- It is also said to diminish wrinkles.
DIY Turmeric Mask
Make your own turmeric face mask
1. Mix flour, turmeric, honey and milk to make a paste
- 2 tablespoons of flour. You can use regular flour, rice flour or ground oats if your skin is dry.
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- 3 tablespoons milk. You can also use yogurt to fight acne.
- A few drops of honey
2. Apply a thin layer to your face and let it dry for 20 minutes
3. Rinse off in the shower, scrubbing gently to remove.
4. Apply your favorite moisturizer.
Will it stain my face?
Lots of folks worried that the Kool-Aid would turn their hair purple, so I want to assure you that this won’t turn your face yellow or orange. But I definitely recommend a thin layer – the more you pile on the greater your chances of staining, especially on your neck where skin is thinner. I noticed some staining on my hands but it came off easily. You can always wash your face again after showering.
Your kids/husband might find this mask a little disconcerting so it’s also a good idea to do this when you have some alone time! I was going to take a picture with it on, but it was just too frightening.
Have fun and enjoy your glow!

Heard that the secret behind aishawaria rai beauty is red sandle wood powder with turmeric and milk that she uses when ever she get time.

This turned my skin yellow!!
Don’t worry, apply at night time and wash it off, by morning your skin turn back to normal color. All the best.
in week how many times we can use this mask
You can apply once in a day, affect can be seen very slowly,
I had been using chemical gels etc( prescibed by the doctor). But that made by skin worse.
But now i am using Turmeric and sandalwood mix (natural product, not powder) everyday.
It’s almost 3 weeks since i started using this. Now almost all(80%) acne’s gone and marks are also diminising.
Procedure :
1. Make paste of Sandalwood(or powder)
2. Make paste of turmeric(or powder)
3. Add water to make a paste which can be applied(adhere) to your face easily.
4. Wash ur face with clean water/mild hot water.
5. Apply a little paste on to ur face
6. Scrub it.
7. Now apply entire paste across ur face.
8. Leave it for 1 hour.
9. After 50 mins apply little water again on dried parts of ur face(or entire face).
10. After 10 mins apply water and scrub gently for 2 to 3 mins.
11. Wash ur face with clean cold/normal water(not hot).
Continue this process everyday, u ll see the result after few weeks(probably 3 to 4 weeks)
continue there after.All the best.

Yes there is only one turmeric…
Just wanted to say I tried this because I heard it helped with psoriasis (which I have on my face) and it worked wonders! I highly recommend it. Reduced it about 90% for almost a week. Also made my face super soft.
I used (old) goat kefir because I didn’t have any milk so I don’t know of if this made a difference. Also this recipe also makes quite a lot. Enough for three masks if not more.
I’m going to try this ASAP!
Can use tumeric powder?
Is it safe to use this everyday??
It won’t do any harm I don’t think – but you might to start to turn a bit orange!

Great post.
Turmeric has some amazing properties but I find it rather pungent. I prefer to use Thai herbs which are also powerful but much milder on the skin. Lemongrass works great for all types of skin while tamarind is good for oily conditions.
p.s What a great idea, ‘simple beauty’. It’s something we use more of.
can it also remove dark spots on my legs?
those dark spots on your legs are something called keratosis pilaris, if you don’t know about that already, i don’t think turmeric would work, it’s difficult to get rid of but people have managed to, right now I’m trying coconut oil as a moisturiser which is supposed to work really well.
I have extreme eczema on my hands… I hope it will work.
Did it work on your hands Maryann? I have the worst eczema and it’s only on my hands and forearms. I feel like I have tried everything, but I haven’t tried turmeric! I’m willing to give it a shot.
Hello! I would love to try this! Will I be able to refrigerate the left over? Thanks for sharing this!
Hi Monica,
Yes you can refrigerate it, but don’t leave it to long…I refrigerate mind and use after 2 to 3 days…
Thanks for sharing! My mom and dad both take a teaspoon of turmeric a day to prevent cancer–they must have heard the same thing your mom did. However, it’s disconcerting to talk to them afterwards because it stains their mouths yellow. I never knew you could use it on your skin–i’ll have to try this!
I take tumeric capsules for arthritis relief – no staining.
This sounds great! I’ve tried another version that may considered Ayurvedic, its works nicely too.
Try using yellow dahl (lentils) and grind them, in a food processor or blender, into a powder. Mix 1 part turmeric to 2 parts dahl powder. I keep it in a glass jar. I add a few drops of water to teaspoon of the mixture to create a paste and use as an exfoliant for my face and body. I love it!
I can’t wait to try your recipe. Ciao!
Thanks for the info’s Staphanie. You are so smart. I always learn something from you. Keep up the good work. I will share your link on my facebook wall and my twitter page.
How interesting! I too would have been concerned about staining, but it sounds like that’s not a problem! I shall have to try it!
Thanks for linking to a Round Tuit!
Hope you have a fabulous week!

Ooooh! I really want to try this. Anything that helps with wrinkles and evens tone (and make me look like Thandie Newton) is up my alley! Would love for you to share this over at Etcetorize (http://etcetorize.blogspot.ca/2012/03/make-it-great-monday_18.html). Party is on now, hope to see you there!
I love turmeric and try to use it in almost everything (especially ground beef/turkey) because of it’s anti-cancer properties. Thanks for sharing this. visiting from Simply Pin-tastic!
Wow! I definitely have to try this recipe. I’m always making my own DIY beauty treats, but I’ve never tried adding turmeric to one of my face mask recipes before. It’s totally intriguing, but I’m a little leery about the potential mustard look. But if you say it doesn’t stain, I’ll give it go. Thanks for sharing!
Peace. ;)
I’m intrigued by this, and can’t wait to try it. I turned 41 today, and my skin could use a little more glow. Visiting from Serenity Now.
